If we believe that suffering in any form is real then we must believe in sin. The two go hand in hand, sin and suffering are one and the same. This is the ego’s obsessive belief that it must keep from the light of awareness. The beliefs in both suffering and God’s Love are mutually exclusive. If we believe in suffering, that it’s real, then we must also believe that God authors suffering and that it has value. God then will demand suffering to pay for our sins. And who would willingly approach such a “god” if this was the cost of salvation? Sin is the secret belief that we are guilty and therefore deserving of punishment. The ego’s belief in sin calls upon punishment that cannot be escaped. Let me explain how the ego’s sick perspective feeds our unconscious fear of God’s Love and thus, of true salvation (liberation).

If sin is real then Spiritual awakening must be pain and loss. Suffering is the cost of sin. So salvation must be feared because from the ego’s perspective, it means deliverance from sin. But in its insane thinking, it projects that deliverance from sin must be at the cost of pain, loss and suffering. And as we follow this destructive nonsense, we can see the ego’s idea of the ultimate victory over sin as physical death itself. The ego glorifies death, selling it to us as a means to pay for our sins and be granted access to Heaven. Yet the truth is God is Love and Life with no opposite. There is no death in God…only in the ego.

“If sin is real, salvation must be pain. Pain is the cost of sin, and suffering can never be escaped, if sin is real. Salvation must be feared, for it will kill, but slowly, taking everything away before it grants the welcome boon of death to victims who are little more than bones before salvation is appeased. Its wrath is boundless, merciless, but wholly just.” W-101.3.

Through the ego, salvation then, is met with fierce resistance. And this is because it is seen as us having to pay the necessary and savage price of our sin. While we still believe that we can be victimized by suffering, then we still believe in sin. And for this, we will continue to fear God and awakening. For secretly, we will believe that the debt we owe to God, in order to nullify our countless transgressions…would be too great a cost for us to pay. Who could possibly trust a “god” like this? And who would ever want salvation?

“Who would seek out such savage punishment? Who would not flee salvation, and attempt in every way he can to drown the Voice which offers it to him? Why would he try to listen and accept Its offering? If sin is real, its offering is death, and meted out in cruel form to match the vicious wishes in which sin is born. If sin is real, salvation has become your bitter enemy, the curse of God upon you who have crucified His Son.” W-101.4.
