Let’s remember that all beliefs we have are prayers in themselves. And when the bulk of our unconscious fears lie un-relinquished with the ego, then these are the prayers that will manifest. We may consciously desire a physical healing but unconsciously, the “cost” of a spontaneous miracle is deemed too great a price to pay.
For example if you were instantaneously healed by the miracle, it would probably cost you your whole world view. Your entire belief system would be challenged greatly. And you would have to recognize that the body and world have never been done to you, you were never a victim of them. You’d have to acknowledge the fact that the body and world were (and always are) being done by you.
If you desire a physical healing but you reject the certain deconstruction of all your beliefs and values, then your underlying prayer would be answered; which is to keep the real cause of the problem untouched. In your prayer, all you would be really asking for is for an ego “symptom” (form of suffering) to be removed; however unconsciously you would prefer to keep the underlying cause of suffering intact which is the ego’s guilt and fear. Hence this is not a call for true healing at all. That is why when you ask for healing of the body (or any other form of suffering) you’re not requesting anything. You are asking for the impossible, for Spirit to eliminate an illusory symptom of the ego that does not exist. And that is why, regardless of the symptoms, it is only ever your wrong-minded perception that requires healing.
“Let us suppose, then, that what you ask of the Holy Spirit is what you really want, but you are still afraid of it. Should this be the case, your attainment of it would no longer [be] what you want. This is why certain specific forms of healing are not achieved, even when the state of healing is. An individual may ask for physical healing because he is fearful of bodily harm. At the same time, if he were healed physically, the threat to his thought system might be considerably more fearful to him than its physical expression. In this case he is not really asking for release from fear, but for the removal of a symptom that he himself selected. This request is, therefore, not for healing at all.” T-9.II.2.

Brilliant! Excellent clarification that was missing from my understanding. This one little post may be a true revelation for many of Us in the One Sonship. Thank you for highlighting it, Nouk.
So happy you got it! It is indeed a very important piece to acknowledge as we transfer our trust from the ego to the certainty of God’s healing within.
🙂 Love, Nouk
Thank you Nouk! I’ve come across your work from my lovely friend Corinne. Such beautiful clarity on this topic, stated in a way to bring some deep ahas! Thanks again!
So glad you found it helpful Jennifer!

Hello,
Firstly, what a wonderful blog you have written packed full of great insights. I am a ACIM student but by all accounts, not a very good one. I do try my best but sometimes I feel like I’ve worked hard at school but get my homework (ie, what I’m manifesting) back with a d-!
Anyway, as I live in a remote area and don’t have a study group to go to, I would like to ask a question on this blog ‘ when a prayer appears unanswered’.
I read some where in the Course that if you are afraid of something that you can also pray for those conditions to be changed that brought the fear about. I’ve done that but to no avail and now I’m abit confused (which is why I read your blog!) I suffered a serious shoulder injury while skiing which has rendered me unable to work thus producing HUGE amounts of fear. My husband is also not working at the moment but is applying for jobs with no result at the moment. Both of us have fear around our financial survival which affects everything. My confusion is why this is happening when I really work on forgiveness (whilst acknowledging one or two instances where I could try harder on) but I am committed to it even if some grievances do sneak through. I also work hard on releasing fear as soon as it arises and constantly ‘choose again’ but things don’t change, infact my injury has just worsened which is so disheartening not to mention exhausting. It feels like our situation is producing the fear rather than the other way round. My question is if it says you can pray for a change in your conditions that are producing the fear, shouldnt that happen.?
Thanks for yr insight,
Sinead Liew
Sinead, the CONDITION that causes ALL suffering is our “belief” that we’re separate from all-encompassing Love and CERTAIN healing (God as our Holy Self). This is the only condition that requires healing. Once this is healed – the body heals. Please do get my new book, The End of Death. It’s available on Amazon in 3 formats (Kindle, paperback and the audio book). Here is a link to a free audio download of Chapter 2: http://www.endofdeath.com/materials.html
In the meantime, I join with you in real healing of the only cause of all suffering.
Warm blessings,
Nouk
