A Course in Miracles is a course… in miracles. While all miracles are caused by a shift in perception, they can transfer to the body/world when our unconscious fear of God has been seen and relinquished. Cause and effect remain in our mind and cannot be separate. Denying the miracle’s ability to transfer healing from the cause (mind) level to the effect (form) level, is separating cause from effect. It is yet another attempt to make the separation real. It is in fact declaring that they must be split apart from each other. Yet cause and effect always remain together in the mind.

The cause of our body and the world is in our mind. The effects, being the body and world, are also in our mind. Why would effects be immune to the healing power of the miracle? This could only be so if we did in fact believe that, 1) cause and effect are separate, 2) that effect (the body/world) is decidedly more difficult to heal through the miracle, and 3) That ideas do leave their source (effect and cause are indeed separate).

God is in everything we see, because God is in our mind. If God is in everything I see because God is in my mind, then God in my mind can affect what I see. God in my mind can change what I see if God becomes the Source of my seeing. And if what I see is sickness in any form, then God in my mind can “see right”. God in my mind can look past ego appearances, and see the Truth (Love) beneath the distortion of sickness. And if God in my mind is doing the seeing, why can’t what God sees (eg. sickness in the body) be restored to perfection? After all, the cause in my perception is directly linked with the effects in form. Why can’t God’s Vision heal both the cause in my mind, and its effect in the body?

“Perception’s laws are opposite to truth, and what is true of knowledge is not true of anything that is apart from it. Yet has God given answer to the world of sickness, which applies to all its forms. God’s answer is eternal, though it works in time, where it is needed. Yet because it is of God, the laws of time do not affect its workings. It is in this world, but not a part of it. For it is real, and dwells where all reality must be. Ideas leave not their source, and their effects but seem to be apart from them. Ideas are of the mind. What is projected out, and seems to be external to the mind, is not outside at all, but an effect of what is in, and has not left its source.” T-26.VII.4.

And below Jesus says that God’s Love heals the cause of sickness, undoing our belief in sin and guilt. And because both cause and effect are never separate, the effects of sickness then, can be utterly undone.

“God’s answer lies where the belief in sin must be, for only there can its effects be utterly undone and without cause.” T-26.VII.5:1

If appearances are illusion then they do not share the changelessness of God’s Love. Only the eternal nature of Love is real and only this is changeless. Illusions are forever changing. And because they can change, the miracle can effect healing on them changing their appearance to reflect our guiltlessness and perfection rather than demonstrating the ego’s attack. Jesus tells us: “A broken body shows the mind has not been healed. A miracle of healing proves that separation is without effect.” T-27.II.6:1-2

He teaches that our body can reflect the miracle’s power of healing, and the purpose of this is to demonstrate to all that we have never been hurt, therefore no one is guilty. The purpose of the miracle is to prove that the separation is without effect. That is why the miracle can heal effects, thus it is physical testimony to the unreality of separation. This is why Jesus healed the sick and raised the dead, teaching his disciples to do the same. And why he asks us also, to become living witnesses who demonstrate that the unreal never occurred.

Regardless of the form of attack, the miracle can demonstrate that the effects of sin (ego) are totally erased and therefore must not be real. Jesus explains: “Your body can be means to teach that it has never suffered pain because of him. And in its healing can it offer him mute testimony of his innocence. It is this testimony that can speak with power greater than a thousand tongues. For here is his forgiveness proved to him.” T-27.II.6:5-8

Imagine a projector and a projected image. The projector represents what is being projected from our mind. The image is what we seem to see as the body, conflict, another, sickness, etc. Both the projector and the image we seem to see, are in our mind. The image that reflects the projection is also in our mind although it appears as outside us. The default projector is the ego, however when the projector is intercepted by the miracle, then the image can reflect the corrected projection that is now coming from the projector.

If we deny this, then what we’re saying is that the projector (ego or God in our mind) and the image as the body or situation are disconnected, that they are somehow separate. Suddenly, in separating them and splitting effect from cause, the image seems to have a power of its own (eg. sickness or death). A power to portray an image apart from the projector. The truth is that there is no disconnect between the projector and the projected image…this is what Jesus means by cause and effect are never separate. “I and my Father are one!”

If we keep the form level (image) apart from its source in our mind (projector), we will unconsciously believe that the image itself is more powerful than God’s Love (projector)in our Right Mind. The image will appear to have power of its own. As such, it will appear immune to our perceptional shift (miracle) due to our belief that it is separate from the mind.

“Miracles but show what you have interposed between reality and your awareness is unreal, and does not interfere at all. The cost of the belief there must be some appearances beyond the hope of change is that the miracle cannot come forth from you consistently. For you have asked it be withheld from power to heal all dreams. There is no miracle you cannot have when you desire healing.” T-30.VIII.4:2-5

When we believe that the miracle is exclusive only to the mind (projector) and cannot be transferred to the body (image), we deny the miracle to come forth consistently. And we separate effect from cause. Claiming that the body (effect) is immune to the healing power of the miracle (cause), is a form of dissociation and denial.

The ego’s dream must be overcome by undoing it via the Atonement, and this is not achieved through death as the ego directs. In fact death testifies on behalf of the ego, that there is an opposite of God; yet God is life with no opposite. In accepting Atonement fully, we become living witnesses to unopposed Love by claiming dominion in Christ, over all that we have miscreated through the illusory ego.
