lovelightAn Excerpt from ‘The End of Death’

We all know the feeling, the angst and sometimes even the terror of seeing a loved one suffer through adversity, addiction, disease or pain. In our love for them, we try hard to understand what they might be going through. In our love for them, we are concerned and worried. We attempt to join with them in some way. Yet contrary to the ego’s idea of (special) ‘love’ and its interpretation of ‘caring’ and healing, real healing cannot take place while we remain fearful or concerned.

Being filled with anxiety, concern or doubt is the opposite of real Love. It’s separation. Real healing is a natural consequence of Divine Love. And it comes from the Right-mindedness of trusting in that Love.  We might say that we love another but if we doubt their perfect healing then we are not Loving them. In our concern, we remain in a state of doubt. Just as fear is the opposite of Love, so is doubt the opposite of trust. And Love without trust is impossible. So worry, doubt and fear are unloving and un-helpful.

Perhaps you are a healing practitioner and the so called ‘sick’ people you see are not loved ones. In this instance, you might be free of much of the anxiety and concern commonly experienced in close personal relationships. Nevertheless the following should be quite helpful.

While we ‘believe’ another’s suffering is real, we are not Loving them. In fact while we believe the body must be cured, we do not appreciate nor meet the Divine Being in this person. We replace their Holy Self with the sickness and attempt to heal what is not there. We unknowingly reinforce the problem regardless of how well-meaning we might be.

As mentioned earlier in this book, we do not know real Love. And because we don’t know it perfectly yet, we also do not know how to heal. As we begin to undo the blocks to the awareness of Love’s presence within ourselves, we will learn to see beyond illusions to the changeless Truth beneath them. And it is this Truth, this Reality, that rises up to heal everything we see. There is no order of difficulty in miracles, remember?

Fear ~ The Biggest Block to Healing

When we’re in fear, worry or concern, or the instant we really believe that there is a problem then we abandon ourselves, and the patient or the one we love, to fear. In fear we separate. In so doing, we forsake the only Source of true healing, God’s infinite Love.

If we call the sickness or affliction by name then we unknowingly assign it power over healing the one cause which is unconscious guilt in the mind. Now we make it an entity all of its own thus ascribing to it the power to wreak havoc.

Next, once we’ve given it a real name and identity, we are compelled to defend against this seeming sickness. We fight illness or pain with remedies either natural or traditional. As in the so called terminal cancer that Tomas was diagnosed with. At first he did believe it and did attempt to defend himself against this power apart from God’s Love. But then he recognized that he was investing belief in cancer and to the degree he invested belief in it, to that extent he made himself unavailable to God’s Loving healing. It was not the cancer that was the problem. It was the unconscious guilt as self-attack that caused the sickness.

The fact is that it really doesn’t matter whether we employ magical remedies or not. What is of ultimate importance is that we recognize and release the fear beneath our need to fix the ‘effects’ of sickness, the body. If our main concern is to heal the body then we are focused on the effects and not on the cause.

Put another way, if you desired to wholeheartedly help another heal, then you would review your priorities. If you wanted him or her to  heal or to ‘live’, more than you desired to heal your own unconscious guilt through forgiveness, then you would not be helping him (or yourself) to heal the fundamental cause of the illness or problem. By wholeheartedly surrendering your own doubts and fears and sincerely accepting Atonement, being the undoing of fear, you join in healing the singular cause of all sickness and suffering, for both of you.

What do You Desire More than Forgiveness?

When we desire physical healing for our self or someone else more than we want to undo our own mistaken perception, then we unknowingly add to the very problem we seek to cure, by making the sickness an idol above and apart from God’s Love within. While we still fear something and have not forgiven it (surrendered it in exchange for the miracle), then we will unconsciously attract it. This is how the ego manifests our fears.

Both Tomas and I learned a lot about healing in 2009 and 2010, but not quite enough to trust ‘only’ in God’s Love. Being fledgling pioneers of the deeper message of Jesus in the Course, Tomas and I at the time, didn’t quite have the conviction necessary to completely heal. Tomas awakened though his experience with illness. And it was a joy to see. However he awakened ‘in’ the dream as many masters had before him. And awakening ‘in’ the ego dream is very different than awakening ‘from’ the ego’s dream of birth and death altogether.

Many saints and awakened masters were indeed awake yet they allowed what the ego made (sickness and death) to claim them; they had not transcended the dream of sickness and death as Jesus teaches. Therefore they had not yet learned to overcome the body and the world; and reverse the ego’s paradigm entirely.

Jesus is teaching nothing less than the complete reversal of all we made to attack ourselves and to separate from God’s Love as our Holy Self. This includes overcoming sickness and death in all their forms through complete forgiveness, the Atonement. Jesus overcame death through his resurrection, for all of us. In accepting Atonement we join in recalling that only God’s one Power is real, and that all else is indeed powerless.

The teachers of God have trust in the world, because they have learned it is not governed by the laws the world made up. It is governed by a power that is [in] them but not [of] them. It is this power that keeps all things safe.” M-4.I.1:4-6

In truth, Jesus who represents the risen Christ in all of us, has already overcome the ego dream on behalf of us all by declaring dominion over all the ego made as an attack on God. And he left us with the Atonement so as we too, could join him in undoing the cause and thereby the ‘effects’ of all adversity.

The only reason we appear to experience suffering is because we still choose to believe in it. We secretly believe we are guilty, therefore we ‘expect’ punishment. And God cannot save us from what we ‘will’ independently of His Love. Click here for the Atonement/forgiveness process.

“The miracle returns the cause of fear to you who made it. But it also shows that, having no effects, it is not cause, because the function of causation is to have effects. And where effects are gone, there is no cause. Thus is the body healed by miracles because they show the mind made sickness, and employed the body to be victim, or effect, of what it made.” T-28.II.11:1-4

“This world is full of miracles. They stand in shining silence next to every dream of pain and suffering, of sin and guilt. They are the dream’s alternative, the choice to be the dreamer, rather than deny the active role in making up the dream. They are the glad effects of taking back the consequence of sickness to its cause. The body is released because the mind acknowledges “this is not done to me, but [I] am doing this.” T-28.II.12:1-5

Seeing Another as a Body

If you are trying to help yourself or another to heal, then do you see yourself or them as a body? Most of us do. But this point is crucial to look at here. If you, 1) attempt to heal and, 2) still see yourself or the other primarily as a body, then here is your first forgiveness opportunity!

You are not healing a body. Because there is no body! Otherwise you will attempt to heal an illusion while further entrenching yourself in the ego’s delusion. The one cause of all suffering, sickness and death, is separation. It is not the body, which is only an ‘effect’ and not a cause.

If you see sickness, if it raises any concern or fear in you, then ‘you’ need healing. To the degree that sickness or pain triggers you, then to that extent your unconscious guilt is being raised to the light of awareness to be healed; to be forgiven.

While you see sickness then you cannot see the Divine Essence, the changeless Reality of that person. It is here that his perfect invulnerability exists and not in the illusory body. Remember the ego sends our senses ‘out there’ to report back what ‘it’ wants us to believe as in the case of sickness or death. We must learn to look past appearances and hunger to be shown the changeless and invulnerable Reality beneath the body’s appearance.

“Show me, teach me, guide me. Spirit, help me to look beyond the appearance of sickness and see your changeless Reality as the only Truth.”

Nobody can be sick unless we agree that he is, and so we agree that we are separate. In this agreement is our joint decision to be sick.

“No mind is sick until another mind agrees that they are separate. And thus it is their joint decision to be sick. If you withhold agreement and accept the part you play in making sickness real, the other mind cannot project its guilt without your aid in letting it perceive itself as separate and apart from you. Thus is the body not perceived as sick by both your minds from separate points of view. Uniting with a brother’s mind prevents the cause of sickness and perceived effects. Healing is the effect of minds that join, as sickness comes from minds that separate. T-28.III.2.

So when another is sick, do not join him by believing the sickness. Ask to see him as he really is. This means you must be prepared to see yourself as you really are too. From my own experience, I drop deeply within and ask to see my own guiltlessness. In this deeply felt innocence, there is no fear because there is a knowing that all guilt has been willingly offered up. I eagerly surrender my fears, my doubts, my grievances and ignorance in exchange for the miracle. It only takes one Holy Instant of complete surrender to Love for the miracle to take place. There is a moment (or longer) of complete peace, of fearlessness. Here, without guilt to block the way, the miracle is free to transfer from cause to effect in the one mind.

And when there is no guilt, there can be no threat or expectation of punishment; meaning there is no need to manifest it. Into this sacred place in my heart, I take the one who needs healing. And there, I see their total innocence too. Complete innocence means complete invulnerability. And that is what I see. I never see a body. For me, in my mind I see a perfect brilliance shimmering endlessly in the light of God’s Love. So I’m able to see their Divine ‘changeless Reality’ for them. If I can see it, even if only for an instant, then because we are one mind, healing of the guilt that caused the sickness, is accomplished. The following quote is powerful. Jesus uses the definition ‘patient’ here but he is referring to everyone who requires healing.

The simple presence of a teacher of God is a reminder. His thoughts ask for the right to question what the patient has accepted as true. As God’s messengers, His teachers are the symbols of salvation. They ask the patient for forgiveness for God’s Son in his own Name. They stand for the Alternative. With God’s Word in their minds they come in benediction, not to heal the sick but to remind them of the remedy God has already given them. It is not their hands that heal. It is not their voice that speaks the Word of God. They merely give what has been given them. Very gently they call to their brothers to turn away from death: “Behold, you Son of God, what life can offer you. Would you choose sickness in place of this?” M-5.III.2

Accepting the Atonement for yourself means not to give support to someone’s dream of sickness and of death. It means that you share not his wish to separate, and let him turn illusions on himself. Nor do you wish that they be turned, instead, on you. Thus have they no effects. And you are free of dreams of pain because you let him be. T-28.IV.1:1-5.

We don’t even need to speak about this in order to help heal another. It can all be done silently unless we feel guided by Spirit to talk about it. The miracle receiver need not be aware at all because we are one mind, and what we share (miracle) we strengthen in both minds.

“Miracles are merely the translation of denial into truth. If to love oneself is to heal oneself, those who are sick do not love themselves. Therefore, they are asking for the love that would heal them, but which they are denying to themselves. If they knew the truth about themselves they could not be sick. The task of the miracle worker thus becomes [to deny the denial of truth.] The sick must heal themselves, for the truth is in them. Yet having obscured it, the light in another mind must shine into theirs because that light [is] theirs.” T-12.II.1.

Trust ~ Should Healing be Repeated?

The sole responsibility of the miracle worker is to accept Atonement for himself. Unless he has exchanged his own fears for Love, and accepted his own complete guiltlessness and invulnerability, he cannot heal. To give healing, he must have first received it in order to give it.

Following here, is one of the most important sections of Jesus’ teaching. When we have accepted Atonement either for our self or for another, then the Holy Spirit has been given access to heal. When Spirit heals, it is done. Regardless of continuing appearances or symptoms of sickness, the healing is done. Even if it appears that the person we attempted to help is not even aware that the miracle is taking place. It is still done. To doubt this, is to doubt the miracle. Further concern or worry is lack of trust in God’s Love. As such it is an ‘attack’.

Should I repeat healing?

“This question really answers itself. Healing cannot be repeated. If the patient is healed, what remains to heal him from? And if the healing is certain, as we have already said it is, what is there to repeat? For a teacher of God to remain concerned about the result of healing is to limit the healing. It is now the teacher of God himself whose mind needs to be healed. And it is this he must facilitate.” M-7.1:1-7

“Whenever a teacher of God has tried to be a channel for healing he has succeeded. Should he be tempted to doubt this, he should not repeat his previous effort. That was already maximal, because the Holy Spirit so accepted it and so used it. Now the teacher of God has only one course to follow. He must use his reason to tell himself that he has given the problem to One Who cannot fail, and must recognize that his own uncertainty is not love but fear, and therefore hate. His position has thus become untenable, for he is offering hate to one to whom he offered love. This is impossible. Having offered love, only love can be received.” M-7.2.

“It is in this that the teacher of God must trust. This is what is really meant by the statement that the one responsibility of the miracle worker is to accept the Atonement for himself. The teacher of God is a miracle worker because he gives the gifts he has received. Yet he must first accept them. He need do no more, nor is there more that he could do. By accepting healing he can give it. If he doubts this, let him remember Who gave the gift and Who received it. Thus is his doubt corrected. He thought the gifts of God could be withdrawn. That was a mistake, but hardly one to stay with. And so the teacher of God can only recognize it for what it is, and let it be corrected for him.” M-7.3.

“One of the most difficult temptations to recognize is that to doubt a healing because of the appearance of continuing symptoms is a mistake in the form of lack of trust. As such it is an attack. Usually it seems to be just the opposite. It does appear unreasonable at first to be told that continued concern is attack. It has all the appearances of love. Yet love without trust is impossible, and doubt and trust cannot coexist.” M-7.4:1-6

The truth is that you hold the Power because your Holy Self is the Power. The one Power of God’s Love is our ‘will’ joined as one with God’s. You will know this Power by sharing it and as you share it, its ability to transform at all levels will become undeniable.

The offer of Atonement is universal. It is equally applicable to all individuals in all circumstances. And in it is the power to heal all individuals of all forms of sickness. Not to believe this is to be unfair to God, and thus unfaithful to Him. A sick person perceives himself as separate from God. Would you see him as separate from you? It is your task to heal the sense of separation that has made him sick. It is your function to recognize for him that what he believes about himself is not the truth. It is your forgiveness that must show him this. Healing is very simple. Atonement is received and offered. Having been received, it must be accepted. It is in the receiving, then, that healing lies. All else must follow from this single purpose. M-22.6.

Who can limit the power of God Himself? Who, then, can say which one can be healed of what, and what must remain beyond God’s power to forgive? This is insanity indeed. M-22.7:1-3.

You will awaken to your own call, for the Call to awake is within you. If I live in you, you are awake. Yet you must see the works I do through you, or you will not perceive that I have done them unto you.  Do not set limits on what you believe I can do through you, or you will not accept what I can do [for] you. T-11.V.9:1-4.

Amen
