“I am upset because I see what is not there. Reality is never frightening. It is impossible that it could upset me. Reality brings only perfect peace. When I am upset, it is always because I have replaced reality with illusions I made up. The illusions are upsetting because I have given them reality, and thus regard reality as an illusion.” W-62.1. (6)

I am upset because I see what is not there. What I see is, therefore, a hallucination and is not real.

I can be affected by this illusion only if I mistakenly believe it. To believe is to give the illusion reality and value. In valuing this illusion I reject the peace of God, the Holy Instant in which all miracles are offered and received. I must make a choice. I desire the illusion of ___fear, pain, illness, conflict, special relationships, being right, my story, and etc.___ OR, I desire the peace of God which is Reality. I cannot have both. My belief in one excludes the other entirely.

Deciding that we want only the peace of God in all we think, feel, say and do, means that we withdraw our value from the world and the body which seems to sense the illusory world. Hence the body is no longer used as the lens we previously accepted to inform us of reality.

Instead of reacting to illusions seen through the body’s senses, the mind is immersed inwardly and exclusively on choosing the opposite Reality – the peace of God – over what the body’s senses report. This is the choice for Christ Vision. We say and mean, “Above all else, I want the peace of God instead of this distorted belief in what the body’s eyes see.”

We rest in this certainty. Not only does God know our deeper desires, but He has already answered them for all time. His gifts are already given. But do we return our awareness to the stillness within to receive them? Every seeming problem is perfectly resolved in this peace. This is the Holy Instant.

Our consistent practice of choosing the Holy Instant of peace to divinely correct all obstacles brings quantum resolution to every concern which the body’s illusory senses report. The activating agent in all healing is our choice for the peace of God in place of what we appear to see.

This is healing the singular cause in our mind of all subsequent errors at the level of form. These errors are the effects or consequences of our mistaken choice to value the ego’s judgment instead of God’s. Atonement is the choice for the peace of God over every temptation to perceive otherwise.

“You will yet learn that peace is part of you, and requires only that you be there to embrace any situation in which you are. And finally you will learn that there is no limit to where you are, so that your peace is everywhere, as you are.” W-rl.in.5:1-2

The moment we are triggered or when we desire something other than the peace of God, we abandon our Holy Self. We choose to be immersed in the dream/illusion. Guilt, fear, and self-attack are the byproducts of this Self-betrayal.

At some point in our own transfer of trust from fear to Love, we must make a concerted choice to stop compartmentalizing our hierarchy of illusions. All illusions arise from fear and exclude Love. Our erroneous belief that some illusions are valuable because they will give us more than what we are as God’s Love, blocks us from that Love and healing. While we are still invested in valuing certain illusions (positive or negative) above others, we unknowingly reject the miracle’s infinite and over-arching authority to heal all.

“There is no home can shelter love and fear. They cannot coexist. If you are real, then fear must be illusion. And if fear is real, then you do not exist at all.” W-160.4:5-8

Following, in this compelling message from Jesus, we see that the presence of fear is a sign that we have abandoned our Holy Self:

“The presence of fear is a sure sign that you are trusting in your own strength. The awareness that there is nothing to fear shows that somewhere in your mind, though not necessarily in a place you recognize as yet, you have remembered God, and let His strength take the place of your weakness. The instant you are willing to do this there is indeed nothing to fear.” W-48.3.

The desire for only the peace of God establishes the condition necessary for consistent miracle working. Once this whole, completely undivided condition is accepted (peace of God), level confusion is erased. Thoughts of body/world recede in awareness so much so that they are vividly eclipsed by the Light of Love which peace restores.

Opening to Accept the Atonement

The ego’s false humility often tempts us to believe that we must qualify for God’s Love and healing, that we must earn it. There may be a lurking belief that we are unworthy to receive His divine healing. “Your difficulty with the holy instant arises from your fixed conviction that you are not worthy of it.” T-18.IV.3:3

When this occurs we will mistakenly attempt to “prepare” our self to accept healing. But readying our self for purification actually blocks the miracle. The Atonement is the correction. All that is asked of us is to 1) Desire it (more than anything else), and 2) Receive it.

“In preparing for the holy instant, do not attempt to make yourself holy to be ready to receive it. That is but to confuse your role with God’s. Atonement cannot come to those who think that they must first atone, but only to those who offer it nothing more than simple willingness to make way for it. Purification is of God alone, and therefore for you. Rather than seek to prepare yourself for Him, try to think thus:

I who am host to God am worthy of Him. He Who established His dwelling place in me created it as He would have it be. It is not needful that I make it ready for Him, but only that I do not interfere with His plan to restore to me my own awareness of my readiness, which is eternal. I need add nothing to His plan. But to receive it, I must be willing not to substitute my own in place of it.” T-18.IV.5:4-13

The Atonement is available to us literally in every moment. This Holy Instant is the instantaneous restoration to awareness of our perfection in God. Real humility would never assume that we are unworthy of having our perception restored to union with God and our brothers. Only the ego’s arrogance could possibly suggest that we are not worthy to be God’s changeless and eternally innocent Child.

We have a choice. Do we elect to believe the ego’s judgment of who we are? Or do we trust in God’s certain knowledge of What we are? Only one is true. The ego’s unworthiness is really arrogance because it surmises that God’s certainty of our Identity is wrong.

“What is it in this moment ___(belief, value, story, need, pain, pleasure, anxiety, unworthiness, etc)___that I have mistakenly desired MORE than the “peace of God,” more than my incorruptible innocence?”

Remember that peace always brings understanding. We cannot understand anything at all through fear or lack as they are not understandable. Fear and lack arise from a mistaken belief in a dream apart from our beloved Holy Self. Yet when we prioritize peace above all else, understanding is the outcome.

“There is nothing to fear.  How safe the world will look to me when I can see it! It will not look anything like what I imagine I see now. Everyone and everything I see will lean toward me to bless me. I will recognize in everyone my dearest Friend. What could there be to fear in a world that I have forgiven, and that has forgiven me?” W-60.3. (48)
